UPCOMING AUDITIONS

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE

AUDITION DATES:

July 14-15 from 7:00pm-9:30pm; callbacks will by July 17 if needed

WHERE:

Spotlight Playhouse, 24 Essex Street, 2nd Floor, Haverhill, MA

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Spotlight Playhouse is holding non-equity auditions for its upcoming production of Arsenic and Old Lace on July 14-15 from 7:00-9:30pm. Auditions are open to all. You may arrive at any time during the audition period, but you are encouraged to come at the beginning of the evening, if possible.

We are casting all roles. Everyone should be prepared to read from the script. Callbacks, if necessary, will be on July 17. See the list below for specific information on the characters. If you have any questions, please email the director, Amy McCorkle.

SHOW DATES:

October 3, 4, 10, and 11 at 8PM, and October 12 at 2pm.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE:

First Rehearsal is July 22. The rehearsal schedule will be determined by cast availability, but plan for two weeknights and one weekend day per week (Tues, Thurs, Sunday is likely). There will be no rehearsal on Labor Day weekend. Please come prepared to list any and all scheduling conflicts during the rehearsal period.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

(age ranges are guidelines, not absolutes):

WOMEN:

Abby Brewster (60+): A darling elderly lady whose main recreation is poisoning elderly men. Abby is the sister of Martha and aunt to Teddy, Jonathan, and Mortimer.

Martha Brewster (60+): A sweet elderly woman with Victorian charm who poisons elderly men. Martha is the sister of Abby and aunt to Teddy, Jonathan, and Mortimer.

Elaine Harper (mid to late 20s): An attractive girl in her twenties and Mortimer’s fiancée, Elaine is the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Harper. She is surprisingly wise in the ways of the world for a minister's daughter.

MEN:

Mortimer Brewster (low 30s): Nephew of Abby and Martha, Mortimer is a drama critic who is engaged to Elaine. A good-hearted cynic who is about to have his world turned upside down.

The Rev. Dr. Harper (50s): Kindly and conservative Minister and protective father of Elaine, Mortimer’s bride-to-be.

Teddy Brewster (40s): Nephew of Abby and Martha Brewster, Teddy is a mentally ill man in his forties who thinks that he is Theodore Roosevelt.

Jonathan Brewster (low 40s): Nephew of Abby and Martha Brewster, Jonathan is a psychopath who has numerous murders to his credit and no scruples whatsoever. He has had botched plastic surgery and is a bit touchy about it.

Dr. Einstein (late 40s-50s): A plastic surgeon and alcoholic, Dr. Einstein has changed Jonathan's face three times, successful only in deforming his appearance. Comic, he speaks with a heavy German accent.

Mr. Gibbs (60+): A bitter old man who wishes to rent a room from the Brewster sisters. The sisters are very happy to take him in.

Officer O'Hara (30s+): A police officer, O’Hara is a would-be playwright who pesters Mortimer to read his play. Irish accent strongly desired.

Officer Brophy (30s+): The first cop we meet in the show and a thoroughly likeable fellow, partnered with Officer Klein. He is friendly to the Brewster sisters, and plays along with Teddy’s delusional presidency.

Officer Klein (30s+): Another likeable cop; partner to Officer Brophy.

Lieutenant Roony (40s-50s): A tough, driving and dominating police officer.

Mr. Witherspoon (50+): The superintendent of Happy Dale Sanitarium, an institution for the mentally ill.
